THE BROWN BOOK
The Brown Book helps to create a safer working environment by summarising an
employees training, experience and competency in one place. The log book enables an
employer to make and instant assessment of the suitability of a candidate for any specific
job description.
When it comes to operating plant and machinery, experience and competency is
everything. But how do employees prove how much they have? And how do employers
gauge competency in an increasingly strict regulatory environment? That’s why Michael
Brown a plant and machinery operator of some 20 years experience created the Brown
Book two years ago to fill this gap.
The Brown Book gives trainees and operators an easy
effective way to maintain a record of their competency, certificates, skills and experience
throughout their entire career. It captures all the information in one place and gives the
user a formal reference for future employment.
The Brown Book was developed in consultation with OH&S managers and key industry
stakeholders within mining construction and training schools, using Michael’s experience
in the building and construction industry as the core element of the book.
At a time when harmonization laws across Australia may reduce the number of tickets
required for plant operators a logbook becomes an essential part of any potential
employee’s CV. Not only will it validate their credentials and work history it will be an
important tool for increasing their long-term employment prospects.
CFMEU National Training Officer, Lindsay Fraser and NSW Crane sector organiser Tony Papas both see
the Brown Book as an important step in achieving a complete picture of an operator’s
qualifications, experience and competence. Where operators have multiple tickets, they
would be able to maintain accurate records of what plant they operated and when. The log
book would work right across Australia or internationally and could be valuable when
looking for new work”, says Lindsay.
Give them a head start in the workplace. We believe The Brown Book will revolutionise the
way plant and machinery operators and skilled workers are graded and employed,
Already some section of the mining and construction industry have adopted the Brown Book
as part of their OH&S strategy.
The book is currently in used by: Rio Tinto, Baulderstone and the Abi Group plus many others.
