About us

The Brown Book was developed in consultation with OH&S managers and key industry stakeholders within mining, construction and training schools. Using his experience in the building and construction industry Michael Brown developed The Brown Book Log Book.

About Michael Brown

The Story of The Evolution of The Brown Book Log Book

The idea for the Plant and Machinery Log Book came from a problem Michael observed in 2008 while doing work for a contractor on the Darling Walk project in Sydney. To help with the project Michael needed crane and excavator operators. He advertised in the newspaper and received a host of CV'S, some with great detail and some very basic. It was almost impossible to know from the information provided, which, if any of the applicants could operate the crane. It was also extremely difficult to verify the work experience the applicants claimed to have, with only a mobile phone number to call as a reference.

Instead of taking a leap of faith and employee any of the applicants, Michael decided it was safest to drive the crane himself during which time he created the first Brown Book.

When Michael showed the first edition to the main contractor the response was far better than expected. The main contractor ordered books for the site, but we had a lack of interest from the subcontractors. They liked the idea but it was difficult to get them using the books.

We have now reprinted the books many times. The new editions have improved layouts and we have now developed the electronic version which can be used for individuals and contractors to record and deliver training and experience records to main contractors or safety auditors.

Our Goal

We believe The Brown Book will revolutionise the way plant and machinery operators and skilled workers are graded and employed. Already some sections of the mining and construction industries have adopted the Brown Book as part of their OH&S strategy.

"The log book would work right across Australia or internationally and could be valuable when looking for new work”, says Lindsay
